Spectators help carry Rocket Rally Team
to strong finish at Rallye de Québec
QUÉBEC CITY, QUÉBEC – Rocket Rally Team finished this weekend’s Rallye de Québec 10th overall out of 54 cars, and 3rd in its Production GT class. The team couldn’t have done it without a little help from the fans.
Teammates Patrick Richard and Ian McCurdy started Saturday’s stages well, running as high as 6th place overall. But they made a wrong turn on a transit between the two afternoon stages. After turning on to what they thought was a road, their Impreza RS sunk in the snow down to its frame. They realized it was not a road they were on, but a snowmobile track! They ran 1.5 km back to the previous stage and recruited a snowmobiler and a dozen eager spectators, who ran back to the car and helped carry it out of the snow. With this help, the team was able to make it to the next stage on time.
"After going off the road and losing some valuable time, we were left in an all-day battle for 8th place," said McCurdy, Rocket Rally Navigator. "It was a really close race. Just 10 seconds separated 8th overall from 10th."
Despite the off-road adventures, the team was happy with its first winter rally. And with the fans. "The fans in Québec are amazing! This is by far the best place to rally, anywhere, period," raved Richard, Rocket Rally Driver.
Rallye de Québec was held January 28 and 29 in Québec City and surrounding areas. This rally was the first event in the Subaru Canadian National Championship, the North American Rally Cup and the Coupe du Québec Pole Position Championship. The Rocket Rally Team, sponsored by North Vancouver’s Specialty Subaru and by Dragon Eyewear, will be heading to Rallye Perce-Neige February 12 and 13 in Maniwaki, Québec.
